The
Strategic Planning Retreat.
Our businesses/practices can become so overwhelming sometimes that we hardly manage to get from day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month, and even year-to-year. We realize that years have passed without our forming a clear plan for our present and future.
We, who are self-employed have an even greater need for planning because our lives are, by necessity, closely tied to our businesses. For a dentist (or many other business owners) it is impossible to disconnect personal life from business life. Each affects the other and are inextricably intermeshed.
The major problem is time. The Suwanee River Retreat was created specifically to solve this problem. In a couple of relaxing, yet highly structured, days on the lazy Suwanee River in rural northern Florida, a dentist and spouse can plan their actions for their businesses and its proper coordination with their lives. The areas for planning are left to the dentist, but normally they will involve the following:
Transitions
and transitional times in the practice including starting an office,
building a new building, forming partnerships, hiring Associates, purchasing
another office, selling an office, or any other circumstance that will not be
dealt with on a normal basis by a dentist.
Teambuilding and getting the staffing
issues properly planned and organization installed. This may also involve
re-evaluating each team member and her specific job responsibilities.
Personnel management is one of the highest stress issues for dentists today, but
better planning can help.

Reaching the Next Level is hard when the entire organization has been planned (or evolved) to handle a certain level of production. Moving to the next level requires new thinking and new paradigms which must be planned thoroughly before being enacted.
Unexpected Events such as illnesses, new aggressive competitors, slow or negative growth, loss of staff, etc. are not dealt with everyday by most dentists who need to spend time planning action before moving forward.
Retirement and Estate Planning is important whether retirement is in the distant future or just around the corner. And, even if there is no real interest in typical retirement, it is important to plan for the time of reduced activity and income.
Team Cohesion and
Communication Retreat.
More than any other area of all the hundreds of practices with which we have worked over the years, the biggest common problem is keeping the staff happy, inspired, productive, and creative. Getting all members away for two days in a bucolic environment for better communication of issues, role playing, job description clarification, and team bonding can increase production and reduce stress levels dramatically. The intent of this retreat is to produce a dedicated, harmonious, and contented dental team for the practice.
Dental team study groups are invited to schedule a weekend for their regular meeting with our without Susan and Hurston as moderators. Prices will vary based upon number attending and moderator involvement.
Susan began her career in dentistry more than 30 years ago as an Office Manager for a multi-provider practice in Minneapolis. She has been the General Manager of a nationwide consulting and dental software company and she has been a self-employed owner of Professionally Managed Practices, Inc. for almost twenty years. She is recognized throughout the industry as the best hands-on practice management consultant anywhere.
Hurston Anderson comes from a general management background as a small business turnaround specialist for many years before becoming CEO/President of a nationwide dental software and consulting company twenty years ago. He is the author of several book on dental office management as well as the Weekly Tidbits column.
Susan became Susan Anderson almost 18 years ago and she and Hurston are owners of Professionally Managed Practices, Inc. headquartered in Tampa with operations throughout most of the US.
